In a chemical context, coconut oil contains a specific arrangement of fatty acids. Unlike many other plant oils that are comprised of unsaturated fatty acids with double bonds and a twisted structure (like linoleic or oleic acid), coconut oil is predominantly saturated (with single bonds only) and contains a significant amount of Lauric Acid (about 50%). Therefore, this oil is an effective choice for those with dry skin. A blind research trial verified that extra virgin coconut oil was just as successful at treating dry skin (known as xerosis) as mineral oil. Additionally, another study found that coconut oil was better than mineral oil in addressing mild to moderate cases of atopic dermatitis (eczema) in children. Coconut oil is a great option for those with dry skin. However, its primary fatty acid, Lauric Acid, has been researched as a potent ingredient to help fight acne-causing bacteria, P. acnes. Though some also find coconut oil to be comedogenic.
