A type of halocarbon compound made up of a combination of fluorine and some or all hydrogen atoms that is used in the production of propellants, refrigerants, solvents, and lubricants, as well as plastics and resins. Freons are extremely hazardous when inhaled in large amounts or for prolonged time periods. Inhaling fluorinated hydrocarbons, like those released by air conditioners or refrigerators, can cause temporary irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat. The use of fluorinated hydrocarbons in aerosolized cosmetics is highly discouraged and is mostly eliminated.
