How to correctly layer your skin care products

At Reviva Labs, we’ve been long-time proponents of layering skin care products. You’ll often find that our products give specific directions for layering with other products to maximize the potency and benefits of those products. But no matter what your skin care regimen, there are some basic rules to layering products correctly, in order to make sure you’re getting the most out of each product.

First, go light

Typically, the thinnest (lightest) products in your skin care routine will be your serums. While most people use only one serum, you can usually get away with two or three – if they’re treating specific skin care concerns (anti-aging, breakouts, etc.). Just remember that, while this is a general rule, sometimes it will need to be broken, as sometimes serums can be a little too potent, and can cause irritation. If this is the case, try the serum after your moisturizer. While the potency of the serum will be reduced, you will still get getting some of the benefits, but likely without the irritation.

An antioxidant is a must

No matter who you are or where you live, an antioxidant should be a part of your daily skin care routine. A Vitamin C Serum such as Reviva’s Ultra-Potency Vitamin C + Antioxidant Serum with Emblica can go a long way toward protecting your skin from free-radical damage.

Moisturize

Moisturizing helps seal your serums into your skin. Your moisturizer doesn’t have to be heavy – in fact, if you’re using the correct serums and you’re not dealing with overly dry skin or a dry climate, a light moisturizer will be more than adequate. Just be sure to moisturize your entire face, neck, and décolleté area.

Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen

The last thing you should be putting on your skin as a part of your morning routine is a sunscreen. And you need to do it every day – even when it’s dreary or cloudy, and even in the winter time. The sun’s rays can do damage any day of the year, and you need to protect your skin at all times. Choose a lightweight sunscreen that will layer easily. And remember; while serums and moisturizers and antioxidants are all important steps in a great skin care routine, sun protection is the most important. If, for whatever reason, you are skimping on your skin care routine – whether it’s for a day or for a longer period of time – never skimp on the sunscreen.

Give your skin time to absorb each product

Everyone is in a hurry, and that’s to be expected. But in order to assure that your skin care products are absorbing correctly, and not simply “piling up” on your skin, it’s best to give each product a few minutes to absorb/dry before layering on the next product. If necessary, inject other parts of your morning routine into your skin care routine. Perhaps you put on your serum, then get dressed. Apply your antioxidant, then brush your teeth, etc… Layering the skin care products that suit your skin type can help give you extra protection from free-radicals, help keep your skin protected from UVA and UVB rays, and increase the benefits of all those peptides and moisturizers that can help keep your skin looking young and healthy. I am 62 and I am showing aging. My skin is dry and showing wrinkles on the forhead, eyes, around mouth, by nose and my neck. What products should I use, how and when?
