Hi, I’m Bill from Reviva Labs, your host today for our Talking Skincare Webinar… Is your skin barrier broken?

It’s scary simple for your skin’s moisture barrier go out of whack.  Fortunately, it can be restored easily by following a few simple steps. Here’s a quick tutorial on the subject to avoid skin barrier glitches in the future:

First, what’s a moisture barrier?

The moisture barrier is the outermost layer of the skin.  Its function is to provide protection against the bad stuff like, sun, wind and pollution and to help our body retain the good stuff like natural oils, nutrients and water. Beyond providing a smooth, hydrated complexion, the moisture barrier plays a crucial role in our overall health too – since healthy skin functions better.

Second, how do I know if my moisture barrier is out of whack?

Your skin might look and feel rough, dull, and flaky. Or it might be easily inflamed, sensitive, and itchy.

While there can be many causes for these symptoms, the typical reasons our moisture barrier breaks generally falls into a few common categories.

  • Environmental factors damage the moisture barrier: Excessive sun or wind, dry air, or extreme cold.
  • Certain lifestyle habits also contribute to a barrier breakdown like not drinking enough water or drinking too much alcohol or caffeine.  An unhealthy diet can cause problems too.
  • Some skincare routines can cause harm to the skin as well.  Things like not moisturizing enough or using acids that are too strong or excessively exfoliating can really disrupt the barrier.

So, what can you do to treat the damage, and restore your skin’s barrier?

  • Hydrating inside and out is one of the single most important ways to treat and restore the moisture barrier.  It’s important to drink plenty of water and to choose the right skincare products for your skin type.
  • Look for products that are formulated with hyaluronic acid.  Hyaluronic acid binds water to the skin to boost its hydration.  Another amazingly ingredient to look for is ceramides.  Like hyaluronic acid, ceramides are naturally found in the skin and will help rebuild and maintain the moisture barrier.
  • Consider using plant oils to replenish and prevent moisture loss.  Some of the most effective plant oils include:
  • Finally, consider using an occlusive ingredient to lock in moisture. For example, Vaseline is fine for those who don’t mind petroleum byproducts. But for us, we like beeswax, lanolin, or other natural oils.

How do you know when it’s repaired?

You’ll know your moisture barrier is healing when the symptoms start to disappear.  Depending on how damaged the barrier was and how successful you are in developing new lifestyle or skincare habits, you should see changes in the skin in about two to three weeks.
