What is Bakuchiol?

bakuchiol flower and chemical formula

Bakuchiol is a potent natural ingredient sourced from the seeds of a popular herb, commonly known as babchi.  Used in traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for centuries thanks to its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, bakuchiol has recently been ‘discovered’ again as an effective ingredient in facial care products.

Bakuchiol’s superpower is its ability to do what retinol does but without all the trouble and irritation.  This makes it an amazing natural alternative to retinoids.

Incorporating bakuchiol into your skin care routine is simple.  Generally considered safe for all skin types, you can now find it in serums, moisturizers and lotions.  It mixes well with other hydrating ingredients like emollients or natural oils to help support skin health.

Bakuchiol has an impressive list of benefits for your skin:

  • Increases cell turnover.  Increasing cell turnover will trigger collagen production, which in turn improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles as well as skin firmness and elasticity.  And, unlike retinol, bakuchiol does this without drying or irritating the skin.
  • Diminishes acne. Due to its antibacterial properties, bakuchiol treats and helps prevent breakouts.  It protects the skin against bacteria to help skin remain clear of acne as it keeps inflammation and redness at bay.
  • Improves the appearance of dark spots and hyperpigmentation.  Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, bakuchiol helps reduce the development of excess pigmentation. Studies have shown that using . 5% of bakuchiol twice a day for 12 weeks significantly decreased pigmentation and provided a more even skin tone.
  • Protects skin from free radicals. As an antioxidant, bakuchiol can help protect your skin against environmental assaults and the damage caused by free radicals.  It is thought that, as an antioxidant, bakuchiol is superior to some of the most common antioxidants like vitamin E.

Another bonus of using bakuchiol is that it can be used easily with other skincare ingredients that we love.  Unlike retinol, there’s no need to avoid AHAs, BHAs or physical exfoliators.  It is safe to use with other products you rely on in your daily regimen.
