The Benefits of Glycolic Acid

Close up of freckled beauty with glasses

I think its time to acknowledge glycolic acid as the unsung hero of skincare. It is the invisible engine that does consistent and exceptional work for our skin – no matter what kind of damage or problem we have.  Plus, the benefits of using glycolic acid are almost as wide-ranging as the number of products it is used in.  You can find this hard working ingredient in facial cleansers, toners, exfoliators, moisturizers and peels.

Glycolic Acid Molecule (2-Hydroxyethanoic acid)

So what exactly is glycolic acid?  It is a type of alpha hydroxy acid that is sourced from sugar cane.  Alpha hydroxy acids, also known as a chemical exfoliators, work to loosen the bond between dead skin cells so they can be wiped away easily to reveal fresher, newer skin cells. But what really makes glycolic acid so unique is the size of its molecule.   It has the smallest molecule of all the alpha hydroxy acids used in over the counter skincare, which enables it to penetrate more deeply into the skin where it can do some serious work.

So what are some of the results you can expect?

Smoother Skin

As an exfoliant, one of the first things you’ll notice is a smoother look and feel to your skin.  Once the rough layers of dead skin cells are sloughed away, your skin will be more even-toned and textured.  Plus you’ll get better performance from other products once those dead cells are eliminated. Moisturizers absorb and penetrate better and makeup wears longer and has a smoother appearance.

Stronger Skin

With its ability to penetrate deeply into the skin, glycolic acid can stimulate the cells responsible for producing collagen.  More collagen production leads to stronger, firmer skin.   With regular use, glycolic acid will help prevent the breakdown of collagen and minimize the look of fine lines and wrinkles.

Even-toned Skin

Hyperpigmentation is improved with glycolic acid.  Over time, sun damage starts to accumulate, causing dark spots, uneven skin tone or dullness.  As an AHA, glycolic acid works by speeding up cell turnover to help the skin shed old sun-damaged cells to reveal brighter, more even toned skin.

Clearer Skin

If you’re prone to breakouts, glycolic acid is for you.  It has the ability to travel deep into the hair follicles and loosen up any built-up sebum (oil) and dead skin cells that could otherwise lead to blackheads and breakouts.  By keeping the pores clear and clean, the skin will experience less acne and the pores will appear smaller and smoother.

Good for All Skins

Over the counter glycolic acid products have a long track record of being safe and effective.  Most skin types, except for the most sensitive, can use them without any problem at all.  Some people experience a slight tingling sensation but your skin will build up a tolerance with continued use.  You may want to start by trying a cleanser or toner first.  These wash on and off the skin and typically contain a lower percentage of glycolic acid.  Since moisturizers or lotions offer a higher percentage of glycolic acid, you will see positive results more quickly.

The good news is that no matter which glycolic acid product you choose, with consistent use, you’ll see results in 2-4 weeks.  It doesn’t get much better than that.  So let’s give glycolic acid a round of applause.  It’s earned it.
